Barcelona researchers discover obesity-treating protein
"RESEARCHERS in Barcelona may just give Ozempic a run for its money: a new study led by Dr Antonio Zorzano and Dr Manuela Sánchez-Feutrie at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine in Barcelona, or IRB Barcelona, has identified an essential protein that helps to reduce obesity without the necessity of lowering food intake. Neuritin 1, the protein previously linked to the nervous system and found in the body's brown adipose tissue, is postulated to help boost energy burning without affecting caloric intake."
"Unlike Ozempic and other products that have been popularised in recent years, which help to lose weight by suppressing the appetite, increased levels of Neuritin 1 prevented animals from accumulating fat by burning more energy through a metabolic boost. In addition to preventing the accumulation of fat, the increased levels of the protein also had other significant health benefits, including improved insulin sensitivity and lower liver inflammation, even in animals with high-calorie diets. The experiments were carried out on mice."
Neuritin 1, a protein present in brown adipose tissue and previously linked to the nervous system, increases energy burning without lowering caloric intake. Elevated Neuritin 1 levels prevented fat accumulation in animals by boosting metabolic energy expenditure rather than suppressing appetite. Increased Neuritin 1 also improved insulin sensitivity and reduced liver inflammation in animals fed high-calorie diets. Experiments demonstrating these effects were conducted in mice. More testing and validation are required before applying the approach to humans. The findings indicate potential for metabolic-targeted obesity treatments distinct from appetite-suppressing drugs.
