GP who failed to recognise critical condition of girl who died from treatable illness found guilty of poor performance
"Three findings of poor professional performance have been made against a Cork GP over her failure to recognise the urgency of the condition of a young schoolgirl who subsequently suffered a painful death from an illness that is treatable if diagnosed in time."
"Vivienne Murphy (10) from Millstreet, Co Cork, died of an invasive Group A Strep infection at Children's Health Ireland at Temple Street in Dublin on March 1, 2019 - two weeks after she had first complained of a sore throat, a high temperature and a rash as well as aches and pains."
Three findings of poor professional performance were made against a Cork general practitioner for failing to recognise the urgency of a young girl's illness. Ten-year-old Vivienne Murphy of Millstreet, Co Cork, presented with sore throat, high temperature, rash, and body aches. Her symptoms began and, despite presentation to the GP, progressed; she developed invasive Group A Streptococcus infection. She was admitted to Children's Health Ireland at Temple Street and died on 1 March 2019. The invasive Group A strep infection is treatable when diagnosed promptly. The findings cite missed recognition of urgency and delayed diagnosis.
