"Have you ever turned up to the work and thought...where is everyone?! Empty offices and flexible work is part of the reason why so many people are experiencing work loneliness, but it's not the whole picture."
"We explore how organisations can diagnose work loneliness and build more connected workplaces."
"Guest: Connie Noonan Hadley, organisational psychologist, Research Associate Professor, Boston University Questrom School of Business and Founder, Institute for Life at Work."
Empty offices and flexible work arrangements contribute to widespread work loneliness, but they do not fully explain why many employees feel disconnected. Organisations can diagnose work loneliness by measuring social contact, perceived belonging, team cohesion, and the quality of workplace interactions. Effective interventions include designing intentional in-person collaboration opportunities, training managers to recognize and address isolation, creating inclusive rituals and social structures, and monitoring outcomes through regular surveys. Sustained attention to workplace design, scheduling, and relationship-building practices can reduce loneliness, improve engagement, and support employee retention and mental health.
