SAMHSA, the country's main mental health agency, is facing dissolution due to significant staff reductions and a $1 billion budget cut from President Trump's budget bill. Lawmakers, including Rep. Madeleine Dean, expressed concerns about the impact on progress made in reducing overdose deaths. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reassured that they are not shutting down SAMHSA but rather merging its functions into a new entity called the Administration for a Healthy America (AHA). SAMHSA was established in 1992 to enhance community mental health services and has been essential in mental health and addiction treatment funding.
A 27% reduction in overdose deaths in this country... Overdose is still stealing a generation in this country. So why in God's name are we shuttering SAMHSA?
We are not shuttering SAMHSA... What we want to do is we want to shift that function into a place where we'll be able to administer it more efficiently.
SAMHSA was created in 1992 through bipartisan legislation... The agency was tasked with supporting community-based mental health services and addiction treatment and prevention.
SAMHSA's budget has grown to address the increasing demand for mental health and addiction services.
