At least six staff members at Mass General Brigham's Newton-Wellesley Hospital have developed brain tumors, with all cases reported as benign. The hospital's leadership, while asserting there is no evidence of environmental risks, is conducting ongoing investigations. Initially, five nurses reported non-cancerous tumors from working on the fifth-floor maternity unit, prompting a labor union's demand for answers. Other health issues have also been reported by staff, but the hospital continues to suggest these occurrences may be coincidental despite growing public interest and media coverage.
A recent statement attributed to the president of Mass General Brigham's Newton-Wellesley hospital, Ellen Moloney, said the newly reported tumor was benign, as were five previously documented ones.
The hospital has repeatedly suggested there is no evidence to establish that the situation is anything more than a coincidence, albeit one which was unusual enough to have captured attention on the national news.
