The Case for Miscarriage Leave Policies (opinion)

Miscarriage leave policies lack attention on many college campuses, leaving faculty without formal support during times of profound personal loss. Faculty, often overstretched, struggle with compassion fatigue while they prioritize work obligations. Despite offering extensive support for students facing similar challenges, such as Title IX protections for miscarriage, the absence of equivalent policies for faculty highlights a significant disparity in care. This emotional and mental burden is particularly exacerbated for marginalized groups in academia, creating a pressing need for institutional change regarding support systems for faculty during such crises.
Miscarriage leave policies are a blind spot on many college campuses, one that urgently needs to be addressed.
A persistent problem in higher education is that many faculty members, staff and administrators are spread impossibly thin, leading to compassion fatigue and burnout.
While we are encouraged to show compassion and care for our students, there is little to no formal infrastructure in place to support the inevitable suffering of faculty.
Students who experience miscarriage during the academic semester are protected under Title IX, providing them with the proper support and grieving time.
