The Miami Dolphins enter the 2025 NFL season with significant attention on backup quarterback Zach Wilson. Since coach Mike McDaniel's hiring in 2022, the team has struggled with various backup quarterbacks. Wilson, drafted second overall in 2021, has been signed as the main backup, with expectations to thrive under McDaniel's coaching. Although rookie Quinn Ewers appears unlikely to challenge him for the No. 2 spot, expectations are high that Wilson can emulate Tua Tagovailoa's development after receiving support from the coaching staff. Wilson himself expresses enthusiasm about the offensive environment the Dolphins offer.
Since McDaniel was hired in 2022, the Dolphins have had problems with all of their backup quarterbacks - Nos. 2, 3, and 4. Whether it's been Skylar Thompson (2022-24), Teddy Bridgewater (2022), Mike White (2023), Tim Boyle (2024), or Tyler 'Snoop' Huntley (2024), none has been an adequate fill-in.
Wilson, who the Dolphins signed as a free agent in March, is the Dolphins' handpicked backup. McDaniel called the strong-armed Wilson, who struggles with accuracy, 'a direct calculated target.'
The Dolphins hope Wilson can benefit from the same career-salvaging program that helped starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, whose career was floundering before McDaniel took over.
'What's not to like, right? Extremely explosive offense and I think they do a great job, and it starts from coach McDaniel and goes all the way down. ... You've seen how Tua's development has gone, too, since he's been there, and I think I'm just excited to be with those guys.'
