Miami-Dade gets back on track to build waste incinerator. But where?
Briefly

Miami-Dade's largest waste incinerator burned down in February 2023. County commissioners agreed to build a new facility but have not determined its location. A landfill shortage is prompting the county to explore constructing an incinerator with a cleaner, modern design that converts waste to energy. Previous proposed sites faced community backlash, leading to delays in discussions. The new facility must be at least half a mile away from residential areas and is unlikely to begin operation for at least another 10 years.
"We have to stop playing games and politics and this is the most important situation this county is facing today," Chairman Anthony Rodriguez said. "Where is the garbage going to go?".
Miami-Dade commissioners agreed to build a new incinerator, one with a cleaner, more modern design that would also convert waste to energy.
Each previously proposed site sparked criticism or threatened lawsuits from surrounding communities, putting the incinerator discussion on hold for nearly two years.
The new facility, which the county says would likely not go online for at least 10 years, would need to be built at least half a mile away from residential neighborhoods.
