Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel confirmed that starters, including quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, will not play in the second preseason game against the Lions. Backup quarterback Zach Wilson will take the lead, following an unimpressive performance in the previous game, while rookie Quinn Ewers completes the matchup. Wilson acknowledged the need to improve his decision-making and quicker releases. Ewers struggled significantly, completing only 5 of 18 passes and suffering from both sack-fumbles and dropped passes from reserve players. The game will be critical for Wilson’s progress, especially if Tagovailoa is injured during the season.
I told a couple of (the offensive linemen), I'm like, 'Man, I was trying to go through some of my reads,' and guys, you know, they're holding up for enough there.
The most important thing to be seen Saturday against the Lions is if Wilson makes strides in operating the offense. If Tagovailoa goes down during the regular season, it's on Wilson to run the show.
Ewers' stat line was downright atrocious - 5 of 18 for 91 yards plus two sack-fumbles - but the completion percentage took a hit from a series of drops he had from reserves and roster longshots.
