Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized by women in Germany DW 10/31/2025
"we still have this problem in the cityscape,"
"ask your daughter what I might have meant."
"I signed it right away, I think it's very important that if we're going to discuss the safety of our daughters, we at least do it properly. Women's shelters need to be better funded, and should not have to turn any women away."
Hibba Kauser, a 25-year-old Offenbach city councilor and daughter of Pakistani immigrants, joined 59 prominent women in a public letter urging Chancellor Friedrich Merz to act on women's safety. The letter demands concrete measures including better lighting, surveillance of public spaces, and improved prosecution of sexual and domestic violence. Merz had said irregular immigration fell but added, "we still have this problem in the cityscape," and later told a reporter to "ask your daughter what I might have meant," remarks criticized as racist and unsupported by data. Protests occurred in several cities, with Kauser speaking in Berlin.
