Ciara Kelly: If the presidential election highlighted anything about politics here, it's that we walk right and talk left
"As the dust continues to settle on a presidential campaign defined by apathy, and Government parties continue to question where it all went wrong for them (and no I don't believe it all comes down to poor judgment or poor candidates, although those things remain true), that Micheál Martin ever believed that Jim Gavin had some kind of star quality still leaves me bewildered. There's a reason I think Catherine Connolly ran rings around her opponents."
"Most left-wing politicians are like this - they generally believe themselves to be in the right and are forthright, often borderline sanctimonious when they state their position - but then again, at least they have one. Contrast this with Heather Humphreys who answered every question like a rabbit in the headlights. In the final debate, she couldn't even say why she would make a good president or why people should vote for her."
Presidential campaign turnout reflected apathy, prompting Government parties to question strategic failures. Micheál Martin's support for Jim Gavin appeared bewildering given Gavin's lack of perceived star quality. Catherine Connolly demonstrated clear convictions, unafraid to state her beliefs, and outperformed opponents through authenticity. Many left-wing politicians express confident, forthright positions and often appear sanctimonious, but at least they articulate a stance. Heather Humphreys repeatedly seemed unprepared, answering questions like a rabbit in the headlights and failing to explain why she would make a good president or why voters should support her.
