Missing German backpacker is found alive in Australia DW 07/11/2025

Carolina Wilga, a 26-year-old German backpacker, was reported missing in western Australia and was found alive after almost two weeks. Wilga was last seen in Beacon on June 29. Her van was discovered in a remote bush area, showing signs of mechanical issues. Local police conducted a large-scale search, focusing on the vicinity of her van. Wilga was located by a passerby, and reports indicate she experienced trauma, including mosquito bites, during her ordeal. Authorities noted the challenging terrain contributed to her becoming lost.
"She's been ravaged by mosquitoes. She's obviously been through an amazing journey, a trauma, and no doubt will be a testimony demonstrating her bravery in the circumstances out there," Western Australia police inspector Martin Glynn told reporters.
Wilga's phone had been switched off, with local media reports saying she had previously kept in regular contact with her family in Germany.
Police said the vehicle appeared to have suffered mechanical issues and was found with plastic orange traction tracks placed beneath the rear wheels, apparently after getting stuck in the terrain.
The terrain is outback country and there's large rocky outcrops, so although there's a number of tracks, you can see how it would be easy to become lost or disorientated in that area if you didn't know it well.
