"The Injuries Resolution Board's first Personal Injury Report on Farming Accidents, based on over 700 claims relating to injuries sustained on farm, shows that nearly one in four farm accidents results in severe injuries, more than double the rate seen in other workplaces, where one in 10 accidents results in severe injuries. In 2024, the average payout for farm injuries was €46,070, considerably higher than the €16,255 median award for other workplace injuries."

Of these, cattle were responsible for 42pc, horses 33pc, and dogs 16pc, four times more than sheep at 4pc. Psychological injuries made up 8pc of all claims; 80pc of farm accidents affected males."

The average payout in 2024 was €46,070 versus a €16,255 median for other workplace injuries. The highest award was just under €270,000 for a fatal farm accident. Animal-related incidents caused nearly one in five claims: cattle 42%, horses 33%, dogs 16%, sheep 4%. Psychological injuries comprised 8% of claims and 80% of injured were male. Contact with sharp/projected/falling objects accounted for 17% of accidents; slips, trips and falls and crushing injuries each 13%. Back injuries were most frequent at 13%. One in four accidents involved people aged 55 or older; adults 35–44 were nearly twice as likely to submit a claim. In 2024, 108 claims were submitted, up 10% on 2023 but 20% lower than 2019.
