Netherlands elects first gay prime minister - LGBTQ Nation
""I think we've now shown to the rest of Europe and the world that it is possible to beat the populist movements if you campaign with a positive message for your country," Jetten told the media early Friday morning."
""Yes, we can.""
""Soon to be Mr&Mrđź’Ť.""
""I thought it was about time," the future prime minister told last year. "It just feels great. We're very happy together.""
Rob Jetten, 38, led the pro-European, socially liberal D66 to a legislative plurality and will become the Netherlands' youngest and first openly gay prime minister. Jetten campaigned on climate policy, affordable housing, and restoring trust in government while positioning a positive, pro-European message against populist rivals. The campaign slogan Het kan wel evoked Barack Obama's "Yes, we can" optimism. Supporters celebrated the result, including Jetten's 28-year-old fiance9, Argentine field hockey Olympian Nico Keenan, who shared their engagement on social platforms and posted on election night.
