Poynter receives Press Forward funding as part of project to preserve local online news content - Poynter
Briefly

The Poynter Institute collaborates with partners to preserve local online news archives, addressing challenges faced by newsrooms. Funded by Press Forward through its Open Call on Infrastructure, the initiative provides $22.7 million to support 22 projects. The Internet Archive leads the project, receiving $1 million to develop a national program for preserving critical local news content that often disappears. Poynter and others will provide training to facilitate this effort, emphasizing the importance of local news as a community's collective memory.
"Local news is essential to healthy communities. As we've seen again and again, it's also easy to erase in a digital world. This program offers a way to archive history's first draft and a community's collective memory."
"As the first draft of history, local news published today will be needed by tomorrow's journalists, scholars and everyday residents. However, no infrastructure exists to ensure the preservation and access of news published online or in digital formats."
