Migration applications rose from about 3,500 before the pandemic to 13,500 in 2023 and 18,500 last year. Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan is reviewing migration policy. Critics say mishandling has allowed emotion to cloud thinking and call for efficient, humane responses. Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe acknowledged the essential contribution of overseas workers.
