Adan Funez, former mayor of Tocoa, was arrested at his home on suspicion of masterminding the shooting of environmental activist Juan Lopez. Honduran authorities also detained businessman Hector Eduardo Mendez and Juan Angel Ramos Gallegos, accused of criminal association to the detriment of fundamental rights. Lopez led an anticorruption effort against an iron oxide mining project in Colon, warning that it endangered dense jungles, crystalline waters, and protected reserve areas. Lopez had repeatedly criticized Funez, who supported the mine and was an ally of former President Xiomara Castro. After Lopez was shot multiple times in September 2024, Pope Francis, the United Nations, and the U.S. administration demanded justice. The case revived memories of Berta Caceres’s 2016 murder.
