"There's a reason it looks that way: Those commercial tenants are, indeed, sometimes cherry-picked as part of a top-down curation by major developers. Residents don't seem to mind."
Construction began in 1997 on the Giants’ future stadium in Mission Bay, where the area was largely abandoned former train-yard land. In 1998, the city adopted a redevelopment plan that divided the neighborhood block by block for different uses and required 30 percent of residential units to be affordable housing. Growth accelerated in recent years, bringing office buildings, mid-rise apartments, and a major medical center. As the neighborhood expanded, highly regarded local businesses began opening outposts along the eastern waterfront. Arsicault Bakery, known for long lines, added locations that now include Mission Bay. Other popular bars, bakeries, and restaurants have followed, sometimes selected through developer-led curation, while residents largely welcome the change.
