Driver was allegedly distracted by a bug prior to fatal Cambridge cyclist crash last fall

Junming Zhu, a 26-year-old man from Malden, has been charged with motor vehicle homicide and negligent operation following a fatal collision with cyclist John Corcoran in Cambridge. Last September, while driving home with a friend, Zhu reportedly became distracted by an insect, lost control of his SUV, and veered onto the sidewalk, colliding with Corcoran. Despite the serious charges, Zhu pleaded not guilty in court. The incident has sparked protests advocating for increased bike safety measures on Memorial Drive in response to Corcoran's death.
"He stated that his intention was to pull over to the side of the road to get the bug out of the car," Trooper Justin Pye wrote in the report.
"The reaction to an insect flying into the cab of the vehicle was completely unreasonable," Pye wrote in the statement.
