Mercury Music Picks: The Cosmic Tones Research Trio and The Barbaras Throw Release Parties, plus so much more!
"Cosmic Tones Research Trio-alto sax/composer Roman Norfleet, multi-instrumentalist Harlan Silverman, and pianist Kennedy Verrett-conjure astral jazz and healing tones with a sacred gospel framework. Direct descendents of 1960s and '70s spiritual jazzists, these sonic channelers also host the restorative NTS show " Music for a Healing Earth," a confluence of new age twinkling and cosmic exploration. It's a soothing balm for the soul."
"For fans of Franc, Tribe 8, Siouxsie Sioux Featuring heavily in the influential 2017 documentary Queercore: How to Punk a Revolution, Olympia's Team Dresch do not get nearly enough credit or recognition for what their music did for queers in the '90s, and what their music continues to do for queers in 2025. They created a space by homos, for homos-especially dykes and lesbians-that didn't exist before. This appearance is part of an event called Menopalooza, with a portion of ticket sales benefitting the forthcoming documentary Menopunks."
Four solidarity slogans open the week: FREE PALESTINE, ARM TRANS WOMEN, LANDBACK, FUCK ICE. Cosmic Tones Research Trio channels astral spiritual jazz influenced by Sun Ra, Don Cherry, and Dorothy Ashby. The trio — Roman Norfleet (alto sax/composer), Harlan Silverman (multi-instrumentalist), and Kennedy Verrett (piano) — blends sacred gospel frameworks with new-age twinkling and cosmic exploration. The group hosts the NTS show "Music for a Healing Earth" and celebrates a self-titled LP with a performance bookended by episodes of Alice Coltrane's Eternity's Pillar and a short documentary, Gratitude to the Mystery (Hollywood Theatre, 8pm, all ages). Menopalooza features Olympia's Team Dresch and Portland's Party Witch, with a portion of ticket sales benefiting the Menopunks documentary (Bunk Bar, 8pm, 21+).
