Tim Wheeler, a Downpatrick native, formed Ash in 1992 at age 15 with school friends Mark Hamilton and Rick McMurray after earlier playing in a band called Vietnam. Vietnam was described as "the worst band in Co Down." Wheeler's intense punk-pop songwriting became a defining feature that set Ash apart. Wheeler later experienced and now feels he suffered a burnout following the release of Ash's first album. The trajectory moved from teenage musical ambition through early band experience to rapid success accompanied by personal exhaustion.
