On FDNY's 156th Medal Day, families and friends gathered at City Hall to honor 70 first responders for their acts of heroism. Notable figures, including Mayor Eric Adams, praised the selflessness and courage of the FDNY members who confront danger daily. Adams emphasized the bravery required to run towards danger instead of away from it. Fire Commissioner Robert S. Tucker highlighted the unwavering commitment of the department to respond to emergencies at any time. EMT Amber M. Black of Staten Island was recognized with the Christopher J. Prescott Medal for her exemplary service in emergency medical operations.
"Every day you go in contrast to that natural ability to run away. Imagine running towards danger. Imagine going against the natural instinct, instead of fleeing from danger, running towards the danger to sacrifice yourself to save the lives of your fellow New Yorkers."
"In the Fire Department, responding to fires and medical emergencies is what we do every day. We respond, no matter the time or location, the danger or the threat; We come when called, period. Today, we celebrate the best of the best; the incidents that truly are hair raising, truly are remarkable and truly are heroic."
