Teranga, a beloved African fast-casual restaurant founded by chef Pierre Thiam, is closing its Harlem location on June 15 after nearly six and a half years. Known for its emphasis on ancient African grains like fonio, Teranga received multiple accolades during its operation. Thiam, who has a fine dining background, aimed to revolutionize fast-casual dining in NYC. Despite the closure, the Midtown location will remain open, and the Teranga team hinted at future expansion plans.
"It is with a sense of sadness and full hearts that we announce that we are closing our doors in Harlem on Sunday, June 15th," the Teranga team said in a statement posted to Instagram.
"Teranga, with its focus on putting ancient African grains like fonio front and center, was a big-deal opening back in early 2019."
