Exclusive | New York orders salon schools to teach curly hair treatment to curb racial discrimination
""I have curly hair. Not everyone has straight hair. The new training at the beauty schools will benefit those who don't have straight hair," said state Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages."
""It's a form of discrimination," Solages said of shops that don't offer the service. The lawmaker noted that she and her daughter both have had experiences with having their hair mangled in beauty salons."
""The person behind the chair should understand your hair," the lawmaker said, emphasizing the need for education on textured hair in beauty schools."
"New York Human Rights Law bars discrimination based on traits associated with race, including hair texture, highlighting the legal framework supporting the new educational requirements."
New York's cosmetology and hair-styling schools are required to include training on kinky and curly hair in their curriculum by September. This initiative aims to combat racial discrimination in beauty services. State Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages emphasized the importance of understanding diverse hair types, sharing personal experiences of discrimination. The new law, co-authored with state Sen. Jamaal Bailey, follows a federal discrimination suit against a salon for refusing to cut textured hair. Current license holders are not affected by this mandate.
