Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch received enthusiastic support from Upper East Side residents during a recent talk where she discussed a crackdown on e-bikes. The NYPD has upgraded minor traffic offenses for cyclists to criminal court summonses, targeting violations such as running red lights and sidewalk riding. Tisch claims broad community approval for this approach, despite evidence showing a drop in e-bike injuries prior to the policy change. Critics argue the enforcement may be influenced by privileged complaints rather than actual data, raising questions about its necessity and intentions.
"Recently, I understand, that the Police Department has decided to be more aggressive about enforcing some of the rules when it comes to e-bikes," said her interviewer, the community center's CEO Seth Pinsky.
"Whatever borough I go to in the city of New York, people thank me for the enforcement of e-bikes," said Tisch. "They complain about out-of-control e-bikes careening through crosswalks, running red lights, driving up on the sidewalks, creating hazardous conditions."
