ICE agents conducted aggressive detainments at Lower Manhattan immigration court, prompting condemnation from City Comptroller Brad Lander and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. Lander announced a reprieve for asylum seekers, but chaos erupted as agents seized two individuals immediately after the announcement. Williams criticized the deteriorating situation, stating it violated due process principles. Both officials expressed frustration over being labeled distractions and had altercations with security staff. Their observations highlighted a troubling pattern of increased hostility toward detainees within the court system.
"Every time I come here, it's getting just worse and worse. What's happening behind us is an abomination to everything that we believe due process should be," Williams said.
"ICE agents are already there, so they have decided that nothing matters in that courtroom," Williams added.
Lander announced that a judge granted asylum seekers inside a reprieve and were not eligible for deportation, highlighting the chaotic situation in immigration court.
Chaos broke out as an ICE agent yelled, 'Just take them!' when two men were pulled into the staircase, emphasizing the urgency and severity of the detainments.
