Walden proposes alliance with Cuomo, Adams, Sliwa
Briefly

Jim Walden, an independent candidate for mayor, proposed an alliance with Andrew Cuomo, Eric Adams, and Curtis Sliwa to defeat the Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani. He labeled the candidates as "free-market" advocates and emphasized defeating socialism as pivotal to the campaign. Cuomo endorsed the proposal, urging Adams to join the alliance. Polls show Mamdani leads but without majority support, while Cuomo follows closely. Adams expressed disdain for Cuomo's request to drop out, critiquing his past election loss.
"Socialism represents an existential risk to the city - politically, financially, and morally. Defeating socialism is now central to this mayoral campaign," Walden wrote in a press statement.
Cuomo's campaign on Monday announced that he had agreed to the proposal, and called on Mayor Adams - who he referred to as "unelectable" - to "put aside the usual political selfishness" and do the same, to avoid splitting the moderate vote.
In recent polling, Mamdani has emerged as the frontrunner, but has not attained majority support, with 36% of voters preferring him over the other candidates; Cuomo, in second place with 29%, would likely be the winner of Walden's compact.
The mayor on Monday responded by urging Cuomo to drop out of the race, and accused him of arrogance, as well as of undermining prominent black politicians.
