Washington Capitals arrived in Buffalo mired in a seven-game losing streak (0-5-2) and sought a spark. Alex Ovechkin opened the scoring on the power play less than four minutes into the game, then scored again 53 seconds later when Mike Green's shot deflected off Ovechkin for a 2-0 lead. Buffalo rallied to tie the game three times, forcing overtime. Ovechkin added an assist on the eventual go-ahead goal and then delivered the pass that allowed Mike Green to score the game-winning goal, finishing with four points and securing an overtime victory.
