Patriots appear ready to turn a corner after Drake Maye's comments about Mike Vrabel
"“I came here because of the familiarity, and I came here because of Drake,” Vrabel said. “I knew what he could be, and it was important to come here and that's who I wanted to coach.” At the time, it felt like an unbreakable bond was forming between the two most important pillars of the franchise - the head coach and quarterback."
"“He's our head coach,” Maye said. “I think he's done a great job of talking to us and talking us through it. I'm just looking forward to getting back to work and getting ready.” “I know he's got the right mindset, and I know he's a great human being,” Maye added. “Like I said - I love playing for him.”"
"Maye took a major leap last season while leaning on the guidance of Vrabel and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Entering 2026, Vrabel could find himself leaning more on his young quarterback."
Mike Vrabel said he returned to Foxboro to coach the Patriots because of familiarity and because of Drake Maye. He stated he knew what Maye could be and wanted to coach him. Maye sat beside Vrabel during the remarks, reinforcing the connection between coach and quarterback. After a difficult stretch that included a one-sided Super Bowl loss and public controversy involving Vrabel, Maye reaffirmed his support. In offseason comments, Maye said Vrabel is their head coach, praised his communication and guidance, and said he loves playing for him. Maye’s growth last season came with support from Vrabel and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, and further reliance is expected entering 2026.
