Demyan's Hofbrau in Stapleton was recently demolished to make room for housing, ending a tradition that began 172 years ago with John Bechtel's brewery. The brewery operated from 1853 to 1931 and was the largest on Staten Island, storing beer in caves in the hillside. The Hofbrau served local judges, politicians, and artists until it burned down in 1980. The Caves nightclub followed, using parts of the old brewery before the site was developed into housing. Some remnants remained until the recent demolition.

The Bechtel Brewery, founded in 1853, was the largest in Staten Island for 78 years, utilizing natural caves for beer storage until 1890.
After the Hofbrau's closure following a fire in 1980, The Caves nightclub briefly occupied the site before it was cleared for housing development.
Despite rapid development, some remnants of the old brewery, including doorways and brick walls, remained visible until the recent demolition.
