Erik Bottcher, Manhattan Councilmember and co-chair of the Council's LGBTQIA+ Caucus, won the Feb. 3 special election for New York State Senate District 47. The district runs along Manhattan's west side from Manhattan Valley to Greenwich Village. Bottcher defeated Republican Charlotte Friedman decisively, receiving about 91.8% (roughly 11,200 votes) to Friedman's 7.5% (920 votes) with more than 86% of returns counted. The victory follows Brad Hoylman-Sigal's resignation to become Manhattan borough president and preserves an openly LGBTQIA+ lawmaker in the seat. Bottcher pledged to focus on safer streets, affordable housing, reliable transit, mental health, and an economy that rewards work.
