Trouble Getting Your Security Deposit Back? This App Could Help
Briefly

A new civic tech application named Depositron assists New York City tenants in reclaiming security deposits that landlords withhold. Following a 2019 state law requiring landlords to return deposits within 14 days after move-out, many tenants remain unaware of their rights, allowing landlords to benefit from this ignorance. The app generates demand letters for tenants to send to landlords. Since its launch, over 300 people have used it, though many more cases likely go unreported, costing New Yorkers millions annually.
"The law is really strong, but no one knows about it, and no one's able to take advantage of it," said Nori.
"You have to evaluate if it's worth your time and energy, and a tool like this is crucial for helping tenants navigate these complexities and expedite their claim for security deposits."
