In a challenging first season with the Mets, Juan Soto faced a unique situation during a game against the White Sox. On a hit that could have been a double, confusion on the basepaths resulted in Soto being called out for passing Brandon Nimmo. Nimmo misjudged the caught ball, leading him to retreat to first, creating an unusual play that exemplified the chaos often seen in baseball. Fortunately, the Mets' offense surged with Pete Alonso hitting a two-run homer shortly after, maintaining momentum despite the mishap.
When Soto hit it, I thought, that's down for sure. It's a double or better... It's just one of those plays that's kind of unfortunate.
I went with my first instinct as soon as I heard the crowd... I probably wouldn't have even been sure what exactly to do.
Fortunately for the Mets, though, Pete Alonso followed with a two-run homer - the first of five straight hits off starter Jonathan Cannon.
So he scrambled back around second base and retreated quickly to first... umpires sorted it all out, Nimmo was safe at first but Soto was called out.
