Jeff McNeil showcased his incredible defensive skills during a recent game against Atlanta, making a spectacular catch to deny a two-run homer. Known for his versatility, McNeil has played multiple positions for the Mets, which allows manager Carlos Mendoza to optimize the lineup and make strategic in-game decisions without sacrificing defense. McNeil enjoys being a utility player and finds the challenge of playing center field particularly rewarding, reflecting his desire to prove himself in that position, especially since the team has a strong winning record when he plays there.
I think I've had a few where I kind of get back to the wall and jump up. I think that's the first one I've had where [it was] in stride, timed it up and made the catch.
It allows me to continue to be flexible and give guys off days. And not only when I'm making out the lineup but in-game decisions... having a guy like that that you can move around to so many different positions and not losing any defense.
I like being the utility player. The challenge of playing center is particularly appealing to me. The Mets have gone 10-3 when I have started out there this season.
It's been something I've wanted to do since I got drafted. I played a lot of outfield in college [at Long Beach State]. I knew I could be a plus centerfielder.
