Recent budget proposals by Mayor Daniel Lurie threaten to cut $200 million from nonprofit funding over the next two years, leaving many organizations in distress and seeking clarity. Nonprofits like HOMEY SF, facing a 57% decrease in budget, report drastic service reductions, including staff layoffs and the potential closure of their food pantry program. The lack of detail accompanying the announcement has left organizations unsure about their future roles in community support and resources, highlighting the critical need for assistance and continuity in services for those in need.
"The big announcement was made, but no details came with it," said Anya Worley-Ziegmann, coordinator at the People's Budget Coalition, an alliance of community organizations and unions.
Jose Luis Pavon, a liaison for HOMEY's Emergency Rental Assistance Program, remarked, 'HOMEY's rental program gave out $1.1 million in assistance last year, supporting 182 families facing eviction.'
