"We're going to acknowledge that there are fears,"
"It is not an end. It is just a new beginning with new blood, new tears, new sweat. And we're going to move it forward."
"Our center!"
The Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts reopened to host a community meeting aimed at saving the 49-year-old institution. More than 300 residents, artists, community leaders, business owners, activists, former employees and board members filled the theater to plan securing the center. The center opened in 1977 in a former furniture store and provides printmaking, dance and theater programs. As of Dec. 31 the center had $400 in the bank and supporters are trying to raise $500,000. External revenue rose sharply between 2022 and 2024 while salaries and program expenses also grew substantially, including a former director's salary increase to $131,000.
