People We Meet: Maggy Fungula and her hot pink convertible
Briefly

Maggy Fungula creatively manages her life and parenting in San Francisco's Tenderloin by using a kid's ride-on car for transportation. While her daughter Simba enjoys snacks and rides with her, Fungula paints the car in lively colors to express joy. Despite the bleak realities of their neighborhood, including witnessing violence and drug overdoses, Fungula tries to shield Simba from harsh experiences while navigating various challenges such as homelessness and health issues. Her approach illustrates resilience in the face of adversity and the importance of keeping childhood innocent.
When I get in that little mood, I paint it," she says cheerily - the car has recently been black, blue, and purple, and the colors complement the rainbow of plastic gummy bears dangling from a gold chain around her neck.
"She don't know, she's just a kid," says Fungula who knows the Tenderloin well enough to carry naloxone.
