A South African court sentenced Racquel 'Kelly' Smith to life imprisonment for the kidnapping and trafficking of her daughter, Joshlin. Prosecutors alleged that Joshlin was sold to a traditional healer for her desirable eyes and skin tone, a move that drew significant public outrage. Judge Nathan Erasmus emphasized the lack of remorse shown by the mother and the seriousness of the crime, reinforcing the court's commitment to combating the increasing rates of child kidnapping in the country.
"There is nothing that I can find that is redeeming and deserving of a lesser sentence than the harshest I can impose," said Judge Nathan Erasmus.
Prosecutors alleged that Joshlin was sold to a sangoma for 20,000 rand, as she was desired for her eyes and fair complexion.
