Gentle parenting, popular among Millennial and Gen Z parents, avoids discipline through punishment and yelling and focuses on warmth and understanding. However, a study of nearly 6,000 children in England asserts that authoritative parenting, characterized by clear boundaries and some tough love, leads to better academic outcomes by the age of 11. Experts warn that the leniency of gentle parenting might inadvertently encourage entitlement and behavioral issues in children. Authoritative parenting includes emotional support but allows for discipline to guide children effectively.
"Higher parental limit-setting was associated with a greater likelihood of children achieving the expected level," say the study authors.
"The idea is to be more like a coach for your kid rather than a punisher," said Dr Karen Estrella, pediatrician at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio who was not involved with the study.
