Lost cloud' of artist who wrapped the Reichstag to be created in UK gallery
"The gesture of wrapping is one of the most radical aspects of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's practice; here, it is applied to air and architectural surface—a distillation of their thinking to its purest form."
"Both architectural and atmospheric, it compels visitors to move beneath and around it. This exhibition brings a work into being that has existed for decades only as an idea."
"To her astonishment, it contained a detailed scale model of Package on a Ceiling, mocked up in a gallery maquette complete with electrical wiring to convey the work's lighting elements."
Christo's installation, Package on a Ceiling, will be realized at Gagosian London, filling a large exhibition space. Originally conceived in 1968, the plans were rediscovered by Lorenza Giovanelli in 2018. The installation is designed to be both architectural and atmospheric, compelling visitors to engage with it. The work embodies the radical gesture of wrapping, applied to air and architectural surfaces. The installation measures 16 meters long and 10 meters wide, descending just above head height, showcasing Christo's vision that had remained unrealized for decades.
