Ontario SPCA centres across the province are experiencing a sustained increase in animals needing temporary foster care, stretching staff capacity. Each of the 12 centres typically has only a handful of fosters; the goal is to expand to about ten volunteers per centre. Demand for fostering is year-round rather than seasonal, and emergency sheltering is required for people facing precarious housing, employment loss, or fleeing domestic violence so owners do not have to rehome pets. Primary needs are for cats and dogs, with occasional needs for guinea pigs, rabbits and other small animals. Fostering time and care levels vary by animal.
