Sam the Toucan, capybaras over coffee, Vellela vellela and a mechanical rhino - High Country News
"Sam's Free Bird days ended after he flew into a northwest Las Vegas home's garage and was recovered, KVVU reported. Dozens of locals reported seeing the large-beaked bird flying around or perching in trees."
"You can tell he's had some run-ins with things. The tip of his beak is chipped off. So he's got some stories in that little bird brain."
"Sam is currently in quarantine and undergoing bloodwork to ensure he doesn't have bird flu. We hope Sam once again achieves peak, and beak, performance."
Sam the toucan escaped his enclosure in Las Vegas in November and evaded rescuers for months. He was finally recovered after flying into a garage. Locals reported sightings of him around the area, with one woman mistaking him for a crow. The president of SouthWest Exotic Avian Rescue expressed relief at his recovery, noting his chipped beak and the challenges he faced in the desert climate. Sam is currently in quarantine for health checks, including tests for bird flu.
