Hyphenación is a newly launched podcast and video series that centers on the Latinx experience. It features moving discussions on various topics such as U.S citizenship and race, reflecting the complex identities within the Latinx community. Reyes highlights the nurturing role of his grandmother, while Tijerina Revilla focuses on family dynamics. Olivares, the creator, aims for listeners to have "aha moments" during open-ended conversations. The title represents the hyphenated identities of U.S. Latinos, a central theme in exploring personal and societal dynamics.
It takes a really powerful person to raise a little queer child and to not murder their spirit and my grandma never did that, said Reyes.
I want folks to have aha moments the same way I have in the course of each episode and to really have a bunch of like thinkers, Olivares said.
Hyphenación is a portmanteau of hyphen and nación... which refers to the concept that U.S. Latinos live in a hyphenated space, Olivares mentioned.
Everything I do is as a Mexican-American. I can't just separate that from my day-to-day existence, Olivares explained.
