Can I trust my sunscreen? Choice test results have created uncertainty over SPF claims and lab testing process
Briefly

Australia experiences one of the highest skin cancer rates globally, prompting concerns over sunscreen efficacy. A Choice report revealed that many popular SPF 50+ sunscreens, including four Cancer Council products, failed to meet claimed SPF levels, with some testing as low as SPF 4. The findings have ignited a debate regarding sunscreen testing reliability and product regulation. While some brands dispute the claims and produce their own testing certificates, the Cancer Council opted for additional testing out of caution. The investigation has heightened awareness around sunscreen safety amidst Australia's sun-loving culture.
Choice conducted tests on 20 widely used SPF 50 or 50+ sunscreens and found that 16 of them did not meet their SPF claims, raising concerns about consumer safety.
Despite strong allegations against some products, numerous brands maintained their SPF claims and presented certificates to back their testing results, insisting they comply with regulations.
