Long-closed Hawaii national historical park reopening on Molokai
"The tour is the only park-authorized commercial operator and offers a respectful, accurate and personal perspective of Kalaupapa's history,"
"I wanted to create something that not only shares the history, but also honors the people who lived it,"
"This is my home, my story, and my gift to future generations."
Kalaupapa National Historical Park on a remote Molokai peninsula is reopening guided public tours of the former Hansen's disease settlement after a five-year pandemic closure. The National Park Service authorized the Kalaupapa Saints Tour as the only park-authorized commercial operator to provide a respectful, accurate and personal perspective. The settlement housed and isolated more than 8,000 people, mostly Native Hawaiian, who were removed from their homes beginning in the 19th century. Belgian priest Damien De Veuster cared for patients from 1873 until his death in 1889 and was canonized in 2009. Quarantine laws ended in 1969; eight residents remain as of May 2024.
