Remembering Judith Arcana
"I was the arts editor at the time-it was my first real journalism job-and after many stories covering local theater (I still think about the plays I saw at Shaking the Tree) and books (a reading at Powell's followed by a strong martini at Pepe le Moko was a typical after-work routine), I had written a feature on the newly-formed Northwest Abortion Access Fund."
"As one of the Janes, she had helped facilitate 11,000 abortions in Chicago in the years before Roe v. Wade and was even arrested for it. Though she wasn't directly involved in NWAAF's work, the abortion fund carried on the legacy of the Janes, connecting people seeking abortions with funding and compassion when state-level policies stood in the way-a dynamic that long preceded the gutting of Roe."
Judith Arcana sent a postcard in 2017 praising coverage of the Northwest Abortion Access Fund. She was part of Chicago's underground abortion service known as Jane and helped facilitate 11,000 abortions before Roe v. Wade, and she was arrested for those activities. The Northwest Abortion Access Fund connected people seeking abortions with funding and compassion when state-level policies blocked access, continuing the Janes' legacy. After Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2023, NWAAF became a frequently cited source nationally. Arcana was a teacher, writer, and poet in Portland, regarded as a feminist icon and noted for her approachability and generosity.
