SamTrans approves contracts for new hydrogen fueling station to support 118-units H2 bus fleet - Sustainable Bus
Briefly

SamTrans is developing a hydrogen fueling station at its North Base facility to support hydrogen fuel cell buses (FCEBs), replacing diesel vehicles. The Board of Directors approved contracts with Trillium to design and maintain the station, which will facilitate the acquisition of 115 FCEBs, as part of the agency's Innovative Clean Transit Plan. Currently, 89% of greenhouse gas emissions come from diesel buses. The approved agreements amount to $17.37 million for construction and $2.97 million for maintenance over five years, demonstrating a commitment to cleaner transportation.
"Every step we take toward a zero-emission fleet is a step toward cleaner air and healthier communities," said Board of Directors Chair Jeff Gee. "This fueling station enables us to scale up responsibly while ensuring reliable service for our riders today and for future generations."
SamTrans has committed to acquiring 115 FCEBs, with 10 initially procured through a demonstration project in 2022 and a further 108 approved in 2023.
The agency's Innovative Clean Transit Plan outlines a phased approach to replace diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles with zero-emission alternatives.
An additional $2.97 million is allocated for maintenance services over a potential five-year term.
