School leavers with learning disabilities land lifechanging' hospital jobs
Briefly

Six school leavers with learning disabilities or autism have secured jobs at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. This initiative aims to assist young adults aged 17 to 19 in making their first transition into the workforce. Positions include roles in operating theatres, pathology, and procurement. Participants report significant positive experiences, citing support from job coaches and feeling valued as team members. The Project Search scheme has already led to multiple apprenticeships and work placements since its inception in 2023.
The teenagers have been given apprenticeships and jobs in operating theatres, the pathology department, and procurement admin, fostering their first steps into the workplace.
Mala Kaur noted, "The job coaches support me whenever I face any issues," highlighting the assistance provided to the new hires.
Sam Deriouch said, "I'm not treated like I have a disability, I'm like everyone else and feel privileged to have a paid job," reflecting the inclusive environment.
Jake Robinson mentioned, "It’s been a life-changing experience," expressing how the responsibilities of the job increased his confidence.
