"There should be no barriers put in the way of people who are trying to quit cigarettes,"
"We have taken our eye off the ball when it comes to smoking cancer-causing cigarettes and we need to get rates down,"
"Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances on the planet and research shows that increasing the price of either vapes or cigarettes is the biggest deterrent to young people starting to use them,"
A 50c per millilitre tax will apply to all e-liquids, substantially increasing prices across nicotine and nicotine-free products. Ten-millilitre nicotine-salt refills are projected to rise from about €5 to at least €11–€15. Fifty‑millilitre nicotine‑free bottles could increase from roughly €10–€15 to €35–€55, with 100ml options up to around €85. Disposable 2ml vapes will see only a small rise, from about €8 to just over €9. Concerns include potential barriers for smokers using vapes to quit, greater cross‑border purchases to Northern Ireland, enforcement of the under‑18 sales age, and nicotine’s addictiveness.
