Toddler Nicotine Poisonings Have Skyrocketed 763% In 3 Years
Briefly

Nicotine poisoning in children under six increased dramatically by 763% from 2020 to 2023. The rate of poisonings rose from 0.48 to 4.14 per 100,000 children, largely attributed to nicotine vapes and pouches. Most poisonings occurred at home from products like e-cigarettes and Zyn. Two young children died from e-cigarette nicotine liquid ingestion. Minor effects of nicotine include increased heart rate and blood pressure, while larger overdoses can lead to severe health issues or death. Easy access and appealing flavors of nicotine pouches contribute to the risk.
"Zyn's packaging is designed to be child resistant." Philip Morris made this statement in response to the significant increase in nicotine poisoning among children.
"It's a high-concentration nicotine product, and it tastes good," said Dr. Natalie Rine. "There's nothing telling the kid, 'this is bad, you should spit it out' ... and that's where you get into trouble."
